Drug name: Bupropion Hydrochloride

Brand name: Zyban

Use: Smoking cessation

Zyban, originally intended for use as an anti-depressant, was found to be useful in helping people stop smoking, regardless of whether depressed or not. It can be used alongside nicotine replacement therapy to increase the chance of successfully quitting smoking.

Dose:

Start 1-2 weeks before target stop date, with one tablet (150 mg) daily for 6 days, then one tablet (150 mg) twice a day. Maximum period of treatment is 7-9 weeks.

Zyban is not recommended for people under 18 yrs old.

Contra-indications:

- epilepsy/history of seizures
- eating disorders
- manic depression
- pregnancy & breastfeeding
- CNS tumour
- alcohol/benzodiazepine withdrawal

Side effects:

- difficulty in concentration
- dizziness
- insomnia
- dry mouth

Other side effects include:

- increased blood pressure, fast heart beat, postural hypotension, reddened skin, tremor, headache, dizziness, depression, confusion, anxiety, restless, fever, chest pain, weakness, reduced appetite, stomach upset, rash , itch, sweating, tinnitus, altered taste, visual disturbances.
